Recent thoughts and Labor Day

Paragraph one: It’s good to be home. To come home to one’s own house is especially meaningful. For all the years we lived in the church owned parsonage, we are forever grateful. I still get a slight lump in my throat when I see that house that was our home for thirteen years. Our two oldest children practically grew up in that house. The birthdays we celebrated there are forever enshrined in the memory. But we are home now, in the house that we built (but not without trememdous amounts of loving, generous help), and we thank God everyday.
We thank Him also for watchful care and protection which He provides. Many were sorely displaced by Gustav, but many prayers prevailed and much potential devastation bypassed. That’s not to minimize the suffering that was brought upon many in Gustav’s path. And now our hearts and minds turn to the east as Hanna and Ike gather strength.

Paragraph two: Fred Thompson delivered a great speech tonight. I would have voted for him. Governor Palin is a smart pick for vice president. In my humble opinion, life is THE issue that gives meaning to every other issue in politics. It makes no difference what value we place on the quality of life for all americans if we discount the value of life for the most helpless and vunerable among us. It’s not rocket science.

Paragraph three: Shortly after we learned of the pending arrival of our third child, Zoe’, we were told that, based on blood tests, there was a 75 to 80 percent chance she could be a downsyndrome baby. Abortion never entered our thoughts other than in the form of a question put to us by my wife’s physician “Is terminating the preganancy an option you would consider?” Our answer, Vickey’s and mine together, was “No.” We prayed for strength and help that we would be the kind of parents this child would need, whatever the outcome. Zoe’ was born in perfect health and we thank God for that. We prayed every day, our two teenagers prayed, other family members prayed. I can barely remember life before she came to us. It’s as if she’s always been here.

Paragraph four: The weather at Mexico Beach was perfect. Friday evening we spent on the beach. Calm surf, warm water, clear skies. Friday night we cooked Lasagne and ate in our little room. Saturday more of the same. Calm seas and lots of fun in the sun and in the water. Zack and Emma did a great job teaching Zoe’ how to have fun at the beach. Saturday was our night out, eating at Toucans, a popular seafood restaurant just down from our Hotel on Hwy 98. Vickey and I both had the shrimp po boy sandwich along with a cup of gumbo that was so good. Sunday morning we worshiped in nearby Port St. Joe at the Church of Christ. The church there is small in number and the believers there seemed genuinely glad to have us and a few others visiting. In fact, One of the other visitors was staying in the same hotel as we, and, I discovered, she lives only fifteen miles away from us in the little town of Leslie GA. She knows my aunt Lela Mae. Small world. The tide began to run in higher later that afternoon and by Monday morning the beach was essentially gone and surfers appeared by scores, catching some really good waves. We checked out, bought some shrimp from a local vender, and pointed the Burban northeast. We enjoyed ourselves immensely and I’m grateful that we were able to go. Behold some photos with which to bore you – hope you’ll take a glance at them anyway and thanks for reading.
