Have you heard the latest singing sensation from Scotland? Her name is Susan Boyle and to look at her one would not imagine the sheer talaent that lies within. She’s plain, simple, middle aged, never been married, and since the death of her mother two years ago, she has lived alone.
Her stage presence on the TV show Britains Got Talent was noticeably nervous at the start as she described to the judges her dream of being a professional singer, a dream which the judges and everyone in the audience inwardly, and some visibly, scoffed at. But when the music began and the first note came out of her voice, crowd and judges were blown away. She could sing. Beautiful is not the word. Awesome is too trite a word. Apply any positive adjective you want, it just doesn’t do justice to the quality of this lady’s voice. They judged her wrong to begin with, but soon revised their judgement of Susan Boyle.
At times our estimation of others falls far short of their true worth, because we, unlike God, cannot see the heart, what is inside a person. We may guess their motives, values, abilities accurately from time to time, but that’s all it is, a lucky guess. We can’t see the heart. That’s why Jesus says “Judge not that you be not judged.” (Matthew 7.1). Treat everyone, friends and enemies, as if they are God’s creation made in his image, which in fact they are, and sooner or later you will discover the true talent that lies within.
