God is following through

Isaac was a miracle, pure and simple. But isn’t every human birth? True, but Isaac was born to parents who had no biologically justifiable reason to expect a child. The woman’s womb was beyond any ability to catch and support a life, and the man was just plain old, which isn’t always an obstacle, granted, but she, Sarah, why she was way past even daydreaming of the possibility. Throughout what should have been her fertile years, she was barren, and now, at ninety, not a chance in heaven or earth. Did I say heaven? That’s not accurate. No chance on earth, but heaven, that’s a different story entirely. Heaven is where hope looms big as a full moon in your eye like a pizza pie. “That’s-a-hope-pay.”

Seriously, the Bible says that Sarah and Abraham’s son was a “son of promise.” She who would otherwise never have heard “mother” directed at her became a mom because God wanted it that way and he had promised. Funny how God always remembers his promise even as we scoff at them. Our faith is weak, but whether or not God keeps his word, thankfully, doesn’t depend on the strength of my faith, but on his own nature to follow through.

God is following through with you, even as you laugh and say “humph, fat chance.” To the mothers of the world and those who desire to be, God is following through. To the sick and infirm, God is following through. To the confused and angry and doubtful, God is following through. To the tempted and tried, God is following through. And because he is a God who follows through, we believers are children of promise, children of “the free woman” through Christ the Lord.

Happy Mother’s Day!
